Here I am at age fifteen, sporting the always attractive plaid tights and lime-green boots. As Don Muraco once told me, “Conan the Barbarian you weren’t.” Roddy Piper’s Personal Collection
Goofing around with Sgt. Slaughter, we were imitating Ole Anderson, the Charlotte promoter who I lovingly dubbed “Pig-Face.” Boy, did it catch on. Roddy Piper’s Personal Collection
Wrestling Outside the U.S.
I couldn’t wrestle in the States, so I hopped on a plane with Flair and headed overseas. Back in those days traveling on a plane was much different than it is today, especially since there was no in-flight entertainment. If you were in the air for six hours, you didn’t have a couple of movies to keep you occupied. You either had to hope for a talkative and interesting passenger sitting next to you or you had to kill the time sleeping or reading a good book. But us wrestlers never had to worry about anything like that with Flair on board. He lived for those long flights. As soon as the FASTEN SEAT BELTS sign was taken off—sometimes sooner-Ric would turn to me and say, “Hey, Pipes, what do you think?” I knew what he was about to do, so I just answered, “Do whatever you want, man.” Ric would then grab his $5,000 robe from the overhead compartment and go into the bathroom to change. He would strip out of his Armani suit and into his birthday suit in less than five minutes, and then come back to his seat wearing nothing but his expensive robe. The bright red velvet garment looked like it had been taken from the honeymoon suite in a seedy Las Vegas hotel, but he wore it well.
After getting comfortable, he would then take the tray from the stewardess and serve the free drinks to everybody on the airplane. The crew always loved the sweet talker and always allowed him to do whatever he wanted. Before you knew it, he’d be walking up and down the aisles hootin’ and hollerin’ with the passengers, and making his newfound friends his favorite drink in the world, the Kamikaze. At first this would cause me a great deal of embarrassment, but I guess after the 150th or 160th time, you just learn to go with it. Ric loved having fun and being the center of attention. Add these two qualities to his genuine heart of gold (a rare combination), and that is what has made Ric Flair the legend that he is.
But Ric didn’t only clown around when we were in the air. He also liked to have fun while we were still on the ground. For instance, whenever we left Santo Domingo we would land in Florida and have to go through customs. One time, around Christmas, Flair and I were in a festive mood. While we waited in line we started singing “Jingle Bells” and Ric began to dance. I had seen Ric dance before, but on this day he was really cutting a rug. After several
